It should be this

public Cursor getCourseNames() throws SQLException {
    String[] values = {COURSE_NAME};
    mDb = mDbHelper.getReadableDatabase();

    return mDb.query("Course",values,COURSE_ROWID, null, null, null, null, null); 
}

Explanation :

the medthod in the api has been defined as

public Cursor query (String table, String[] columns, String selection, String[] selectionArgs, String groupBy, String having, String orderBy)

So you need to pass the strings accordingly.

User my example as a reference it works for me
